GATE was off to a lovely start Friday morning. We had expected rain but lucked out with sunny skies for exploring this inspiring city through the lens of art. This year we welcomed 72 art teachers from 25 countries!

We toured one of Gaudi's masterpieces, a defining feature of the Passeig de Gracia area of Barcelona. Once ridiculed for its highly unusual design, this building is now a celebrated architectural landmark. The gorgeous, organic details of the interior were a site to behold. We then spent some quality time on its roof, sketching animated chimneys in the sun.

We were blown away by the impossible scale and incredible beauty of this incomparable work of architecture. Still under construction, this spectacular church is Antoni Gaudi's master work. The interplay of light, color and space was an inspirational place for photography, sketching and meditation.

Hybrid photography happens when experiments and interventions are done on photographic prints which are then rephotographed. In this interactive hands-on workshop, we applied techniques such as painting, embroidery, scratching, burning, punching holes, deteriorating gestures and added materials like water, salt or tea to get one-of-a-kind effects on our own photos.

Using simplistic forms through mixed media, participants were taken through a series of prompts to generate a number of artworks. We then worked collaboratively to find commonalities across our works and curate a cohesive exhibition. This was a powerful tool to bring back to our high school students.

using Processing, a flexible software "sketchbook" that inspires artists to explore art using code. We considered ways in which computational algorithms mirror traditional artistic processes but are carried out by a computer rather than a human being and discussed the burgeoning
influence of artificial intelligence and its impact on the production of digital art.

In this workshop, she shared her knowledge with us and guided us through the discovery of how colors are created from plants. It was truly remarkable.
